For the fourth time in three days, Melissa tried Dylan’s number. His voicemail box wasn’t accepting messages, and he wasn’t returning her calls. If this kept up, she’d be forced to call Christopher to see how their son was doing.

“What?” came Dylan’s gruff voice, full of attitude.

“I just wanted to check on you,” Melissa said, trying not to ruffle at his tone.

“Great. I’m fine. Is that all?”

“Hold your horses. Why are you in such a rush?” Melissa took a deep breath and leaned her elbow heavily into the arm of the chair she was sitting in. The house was quiet. Emily was gone with Addison, shopping. Mom was at a friend’s house.

“I don’t feel like talking,” Dylan grumbled.

“Don’t feel like talking at all... or don’t feel like talking to me?” Melissa swallowed the thickness in her throat.

“I don’t feel like talking to you,” Dylan’s voice grew more hostile.

The acrid taste of bile made Melissa swallow again and she rubbed her tongue along the roof of her mouth, trying to rid herself of the bitter taste. “I’m sorry. How’s school going?”

“You know, if you were here, where you belong, we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now. You’d log into the parent thing and see my grades. You’d make me come out of my room for dinner. But for whatever stupid reason, you’re still in Arizona with Grammy. Does she even want you there still?”

“Why wouldn’t she want me here?” Melissa felt foolish for even asking the question, but she was at a loss for words.

“Don’t you think she wants life to get back to normal? To be back on her own schedule instead of worrying about you all the time?” A thump and some rustling made Melissa pause. Dylan’s voice returned. “Dropped my phone.”

“I don’t think life is going back to normal for Grammy. She lost the love of her life, Dylan. And I don’t think it bothers her that I’m here.”

“Well, it should. Everyone should be asking you why you’re avoiding home, Dad, me. You’ve betrayed all of us, but no one wants to say that to you. But I will. I’m not afraid. This is supposed to be your home, Mom. You’re supposed to be here.”

“I can’t be there right now,” Melissa said. The weakness in her voice made her angry, but she didn’t want Dylan to feel that anger, so she cleared her throat gently. “A lot has happened. I need some space.”

“You need space?” He sounded incredulous. “Have you thought about how Dad feels?”

Melissa closed her eyes. She tried to consider how Christopher felt, early on. But as he carried on about an affair that never happened, she grew cold to his feelings on the matter. She was sick of being accused. “I’ve tried Dylan. But I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t like being treated as though I had messed up.”

“You’re just going to defend yourself against everything I say instead of admitting where you messed up. It’s whatever. I gotta go.”

Before Melissa could argue or try to keep him on the phone, Dylan ended the call.
